[Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County,
MI, July 24, 2009]
Firecrackers explode at night
Crows and chippies by first light
Motorcycles growl the prowl
A woman lets loose a yowl
Sound assaults us through the day
Our fridge coughs and hacks along
An old iron lung’s hopeful song
The coffee pot is perking
Jerking, schlurping and hargling
Like an asthmatic gargling
Children scream with directed glee
But out the windows all we can see
In gelatinous thick fog
Wrapping us in opaque shrouds:
All our dreams of solitude
Broken by machines and dudes
