Umlaut
[Deer Park, September 21, 2013]

You hear the diacritic,
Wind-driven surfs lacking tides riding
Across the unmarked border
Suffocating crescendos,
Riled Sweetwater crushings
Bringing stoney bones and trees
That the fates drifted aimlessly
For decades in Superior’s far reaches
Possibly ones my friend Louie
Climbed in distant Thunder Bay
When he was twelve and not yet bit
By the junior hockey snake
